Subject: Solo Air Travel

Message:
My two sons'(12 & 16)father has decided to move from the Boston to California. Their father will visit the East several times during the year, however he wants to have the boys visit him during the summer and fly themselves out to California. I realize children as young as 5 fly alone but I am still VERY uncomfortable with this idea. My older son is ambivalent about flying himself as well. Any comments are welcome.

I don't blame you for feeling uncomfortable. There is much that can happen, such as lay overs in large airports and having to make connections.
I don't know if I really have any advice, just empathy. Do you HAVE to send them?

I have flown my daughter to see her father on numerous occasions. She started flying alone when she was 10. When you book the flight let them know the age of the child(ren) and tell them you want them at the front of the plane and watched. There will be a flight attendant that will be *in charge* of them the entire flight, even for lay overs!! Check with your air line and see what arrangements they will make for you. They are very accomodating in Canada.

I was forced into having my child travel solo when she was only 6 years old. She is now 11 and it is still a very difficult thing to do. Make sure the airline knows they are unaccompanied minors. This way their father must sign for them at the gate. Have them pack back packs with all the phone numbers (from both states) so that if there are delays they can inform someone. I also made it very clear to my ex and to my child that she is to call as soon as she deboards the aircraft. No, not after they collect the luggage or after they get home. Immediately as she gets off the plane. This helps some with the anxiety I feel but I think it will be hard forever. Just look for their happiness in their visits with him and stay positve. I hope this helps you. :)

Hi! I fly a LOT for business -- all over the country and the world, and I see a lot of young kids flying by themselves --all ages. If you notify the airlines, their staff are very good about checking on the child's comfort and happiness during the flight. They give them little gifts and packages to keep them busy. They will also make sure that your child is met by his/her parent at the other end. It can be a very exciting experience for your children-- flying in itself, as well as the responsibility and maturity you let them experience. And it's all safely handled. They'll appreciate you for it. Send them off and enjoy some quiet time for yourself -- hey, why don't you take a flight to someplace for a mini-vacation?!
