Subject: Driver's License
Message: My sixteen year old A.D.H.D. son wants to get his driver's license. While I know it is normal, it is a bit scary. He is still impulsive and immature. Any advice?

Message: You might remind him ... a driver's license is a privilege, not a right. If you do not feel that he is ready to get his driver's license, don't let him do it. Let him get his learner's permit, allow him to practice driving with you (for as long as you feel he needs to), and if you don't feel he is ready to get his license before he can sign for it on his own, then don't let him do it! You also need to take into consideration the fact that with a license he needs to be added to your insurance policy. This costs money. Is he willing to work to pay for the increase? Are you willing to deal with the increased premiums when he has an accident? Just a few things to think about. It's up to you, as the parent, to decide when he is ready to get a license.
