PROVERBS FOR PARENTING

Temper that Temper
By Patti Chadwick

Proverbs 16:32
"It is better to be patient than powerful; it is better to have self
control than to conquer a city." (NLT)

This is a very important verse that affects the whole Christian life.
Many of us struggle with a bad temper and this verse serves as a
reminder that only fools rush in, saying things without thinking and
acting in ways that are unlovely.

My teens and I have memorized this verse in the KJV and like the way
it is stated, "He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty...."
It's hard to keep one's temper and it shows great personal strength do
so. The KJV goes on to say, "and he that ruleth his spirit than he who
taketh a city." It is harder to control yourself than it is for a warrior to
invade and capture an entire city! What a lesson for your teens!
No wonder James 3:8 warns us "but no man can tame the tongue. It is
a restless evil, full of deadly poison." How hard it is to say the right
thing. Even harder is NOT saying the wrong thing.

Do you struggle with your temper? When you get busy or tired, is it
easy for you to be provoked? When you are provoked, do you behave
in an unseemly manner? You are a model to your teens. You set an
example, whether good or bad. You need to set the right example for
them to follow in this matter. Usually people live what they learn, so
make sure you are teaching your teens to control their temper by
controlling your own. They need to learn this lesson early on; their
adult life will be all the better for it.

Why not memorize this verse with your teens and take it to heart. Use
it as a reminder to practice self control in your everyday life and
relationships.

Diet and Nutrition Help

http://sites4moms.com/cgi-bin/go.pl?id=133
Visit

Whether or not you need to loose weight, most all of us could stand
to eat more nutritiously. Personally, I need to loose a little more
than 20 pounds, but even more critical than that are the eating
habits I need to change. I have an aversion to vegetables developed
in childhood that I still tend to be childish about. The worse thing
is that I generally replace my daily vegetable servings with
something sweet or full of carbohydrates. All said. I need to change
for my health.

The toughest part for me is getting motivated and then STAYING
motivated. I do much better with a friend to go through the trenches
with. I recently began a diet using the online support center at
eDiets.com. This is a site that really has their act together. Now
this is NOT a free service, but it really is reasonably priced for
the quality level of tools and information.

You can find some serious motivation just your style here. They offer
online chats, mentor programs, discussion boards, friend circles and
a ton of success stories to prompt folks like me along. They will
match you up with people in your similar stage to be diet buddies
with.

When you first sign up you will create a customized plan for your
needs. This will include your goals for weight loss or maintenance.
They will help you customize a food plan for you and set challenges.
They don't just leave you there, though, they continue with a full
plan of how to attain that goal. You have tools for calculating
everything except the hairs on your head *grin* which really come in
handy to know your system and what will be effective for you.

My favorite thing is the menu planner. You are the only one who truly
knows what foods work for you. That's why YOU select what you
want to eat for each meal from the choices they give you. That means
no counting and calculating on your part because they do it all
automatically. They'll even give you a grocery list of the items you
need to purchase. Your personal start page will show your menu for
the day as well as the progress you've made and what needs to be done
before your next check-in time.

But most of all, I enjoy that this is totally online. You don't have
to dress up and stress out over making a weekly meeting in your town.
Just jump online anytime day or night and you receive the best help
around without giving up the comfort of your home or the anonymity
of a computer screen.

You really can't go wrong with this plan. So, go take a peek

Fridge Clutter and How to Avoid it

Anyone who spends any time at all in a kitchen quickly learns about
refrigerator art: what it is, how it's displayed, and who created it. If
your refrigerator is anything like that of other parents, it's plastered
with kid art, the family calendar, homework assignments, soccer
schedules, doctor's appointment reminders, and.... that's just the front!

My refrigerator is full, too, but I gave up rearranging those teeny
magnets ages ago. No sooner would I get six of them to hold up one
tiny school picture, than SLAM - there went the whole arrangement
crashing to the floor. Below are some of my favorite tricks of the trade
to start taming the fridge clutterbug in your home:

Art du Jour - Instead of turning the front of your refrigerator into an
art gallery, why not limit artwork to 1 per artist, saving the remaining
paintings for Grandma or the scrapbook. Rotate the pictures daily or
weekly, store in a tagboard portfolio beside the refrigerator, and then
move them to a more permanent home (like a treasure box or
scrapbook). Hint: place your budding artists in charge of this project,
letting them choose one day a week to change out the artwork. Create
a "home" for undisplayed work to live after its served time in the
magnetic gallery.

Photo Mat- Consider using magnetic-backed acrylic frames to display
your favorite snapshots. These come in various sizes for your photos,
from wallet to 8x10. Or consolidate your pictures into a collage mat.
Purchase these ready-made from catalogs, or make your own by
backing them with heavy-duty magnet sheets purchased from your
local craft or discount store.

Clip Art -Purchase extra-strong magnetic clips to hold important
papers. Think of this as a vertical clipboard where you can post
grocery list, soccer schedule, homework assignments, signed field trip
releases, and copies of your latest dietary requirements. Not only does
this conserve precious space, but also if your magnet is strong enough,
you can just flip through to the page you need with little rearranging.

Chore Charts - Eliminate the need for repeated note posting and use a
pint-sized chore chart for your family. I found a small wipe-off board
shaped like a pencil in the school supply section of a local discount
store, complete with grids, stickers, and erasable marker. This
particular product is backed with strong magnets, but you can easily
improvise and add your own to a poster or homemade chart. If your
kids are small, you may want to hang this high to avoid creative
rearrangements of the stickers.

ABCs and 123s Please - Let's take a quick poll to see how many sets
of plastic alphabet magnets you purchased before your kids reached
adolescence - anyone? I'll bet that if you pulled out the refrigerator
from the wall or used a coat hanger, you could fish out enough ABCs
to write the Gettysburg Address. Why not use an alphabet poster
instead, with medium-strength magnets attached to the back? Take a
quick road trip to your local school supply, and you will find posters
on any subject that your child is interested in: alphabet (upper and
lower), numbers (1-10, 10-20), farm animals, manners, The 5 Senses,
etc. I think you get the picture - it's much easier to corral a poster than
a menagerie of plastic parts. Once Junior is old enough to use those
plastic letters for spelling words, he's outgrown the fridge easel
anyway, and can easily use a laptop magnetic board or one that is
mounted on his wall.

With a bit of creativity and a lot of consolidation, you can regain
control of your refrigerator for the purpose it was intended: to keep
foods cool or frozen, and provide nutritional snacks for your family.
But don't ask me if that little light really does stay on when you close
the door. I haven't managed to figure that one out yet.

PARENTING IN THE SINGULAR

Mom's House...Dad's House...Try Thinking "Out of the Box"

When relationships with children split apart, one of the most important
issues to be decided is custody and visitation. The courts feel these
issues to be so important that in many states, a divorce can't be granted
unless an agreement is made setting forth which parent has custody
and visitation and when. Hammering out custody and visitation is a
lot of work and takes an emotional toll on all parties. Only after the
agreement has been put into a legal document and entered as part of
the judgment of divorce, can you breathe a sigh of relief and consider
it a "done deal." Or can you?

You many have to make some changes in your custody and visitation
schedule as children head into the teenage years. For one thing, as
children get older, they become more vocal about where they wish to
spend their time. A single mom who has had custody of her son for
ten years may now be told by her teenager that he now wants to live
with his father. What mother wouldn't be hurt and emotionally
devastated at first? But, however, by thinking "out of the box", a
parent can step away from emotions and focus on what is best for her
teenage child. Teens need to feel as though they are in control, and a
parents' separation and divorce is something out of their control. As a
child becomes a teen, however, the ability to select which parent to
live with definitely puts a teen back in control. It may not always be
possible for a teen to live with the parent he or she wishes to live with,
but whenever possible, the request should be considered.

This custody and visitation thing works both ways also. Instead of
wanting to spend more time with a parent, teens may wish to spend
less. When my children were younger they couldn't wait to go to
"daddy's house." Now that they are older, they want to stay around
home more. Why? Well for one thing their friends live in the
neighborhood and are close to home. And another - they are
developing social lives. Suddenly there are conflicts. Dad's visit falls
on the same night as a "must go" game/dance/concert . Resentment
can rise when teens are forced to miss an important activity because it
conflicts with visitation. Parents need to become more flexible with
visitation as their children grow older.

The teenage years are filled with trial separations from parents. This is
a healthy and normal process, and occurs whether parents live together
or apart, have custody or visitation. Whenever possible, both parents
need to honor this teenage right of passage. There are situations when
custody and visitation absolutely cannot be changed. But in those
families where it can be re-evaluated, if a teen requests a different
schedule, maybe its time to modify the arrangement. This may
involve both parents putting their emotional baggage aside in favor of
what is best for their teenager.

THIS WEEK'S QUESTIONS

My daughter (17 1/2) just got her driver's license today. She attended
driving classes and she drove the required 50 hours with me. My
question is: Now that she has the license, what rules apply to her and
driving now? She has a job and will be paying for the addt'l insurance
coverage. She does not have her own car so she mostly will be driving
back and forth to work or school using one of our cars. She is
basically a responsible kid and does not use drugs/alcohol. I still feel
the need to sit down with her and lay down the law about this new
privilege and big responsibility. I have a few in mind, but would love
to hear what you have learned! Thank you.
